Based on the first living being to orbit the earth, Laika; her story is an exceptionally sad one, and I wanted to create a piece of art commemorating this sweet angel.
Laika was a Soviet space dog who was one of the first animals in space and the first to orbit the Earth. She was a stray mongrel from the streets of Moscow, taken in specifically to help Russian scientists learn more about the effects of spaceflight on living beings. She flew aboard the Sputnik 2 spacecraft, launched into low orbit on November 3rd 1957. The most upsetting part about her story is that the technology to de-orbit had not yet been developed, and poor, sweet Laika's survival was never expected. While animals are *still* being sent to space today, they are almost always expected to survive - due to our own advances in technology, and I would hope increased empathy for the innocent beings whom make our scientific discoveries available.
The scientists who worked with her adored her, and had several pet names for her - including Limonchik, which meant "Little Lemon".
